The Benefits

What Will Little Yogis Learn?

Balanced Mind

Along with the physical aspects of kids’ yoga, the mental benefits are just as, if not more, powerful. Our focus will be on the specific social and emotional skills that are developmentally appropriate for each age group. Mindfulness techniques will be taught through breathing practice, age-appropriate mediation and yoga storytelling activities. Through regular practice, Little yogis will begin to incorporate these mindfulness practices into their everyday activities. The result will be a more calm, emotionally aware child that is able to control and express their feelings.

Balanced Body

During these unique kids yoga classes, standing, sitting and balance poses will all be explored in a variety of ways. Animal yoga poses, yoga dance, restorative yoga, chair yoga and yoga games are just a few ways children will be introduced to the powerful benefits of this practice at an early age. Building core strength, balance and whole body self-control will all be elements that you will see during these classes. Yoga stretching as well as understanding the power of having a quiet body will all be part of the classes yoga sequence. The children will become more physically aware of their space and will use these physical yoga tools throughout their entire day.

Learning

We believe that children are the most open to learning when they feel good both mentally and physically. Customized lessons that match current themes, curriculum and academic goals add an element of depth to our yoga classes. Children’s yoga is not just about poses and stretching, it is about introducing kids to a practice that promotes physical and emotional well-being. When children feel their best physically and emotionally, they are open and receptive to learning and growing.

About me

movement expert

In addition to being a certified children’s yoga instructor, I am also a long-time educator and certified teacher. After teaching kindergarten for 14 years and incorporating yoga into my classrooms, I have experienced first-hand the benefits, and positive effects yoga has on children.

Along with my yoga certification, I hold a BA in Elementary Education, a MA in Curriculum and Instruction: Early Childhood Education, and Graduate Certification in Gifted Education. Fully understanding the different learning styles of children and how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all kids allows me to build a custom program for your children, including yoga and other aspects of education.

Partnering with parents, teachers, and caregivers to use current best practices with children will make these yoga classes more meaningful than your standard yoga classes. My goal will always be to provide an exceptional program that goes above and beyond.

FAQs

Do you have some questions in mind?
Here are some of the often questions we encountered.

Yoga provides many benefits for children, physically and mentally.

Physically, yoga helps children learn to become more grounded and spatially aware. Children are naturally more flexible and for some kids, it may seem that they prefer to be “floppy”. Yoga helps children build core strength, which improves posture, balance and stamina. With consistent yoga practice, you will see children sitting up instead of slouching and sitting properly in chairs instead of sliding or falling off of them. You will also notice the amount of time a child can sit or stand properly will increase, which will have a positive effect on their ability to focus and pay attention. Children will become more aware of the space around them and how their bodies fit into it as well.

Mentally, yoga helps children stay centered and calm in moments that could be stressful. Breathing and mindfulness techniques can give children the tools they need to handle challenging social situations and to stay calm and be better problem solvers when they encounter a task or activity that might be difficult. They will learn to analyze their own emotions and act appropriately. With consistent yoga practice, children will show an increase in self-control and improve their overall reactions to stressful events throughout the day.

When an adult thinks of yoga, they might think of an hour in a quiet room with people silently holding pose after pose. This is NOT what a childrens’ yoga class is like. In our classes, children will move through a variety of activities which include breathing techniques, yoga story time, floor poses, seated poses, standing poses, balance poses, yoga games (so many games), and stretching. Children will get to be active participants and leaders of the class. They will learn to work independently and with others. The movement and fun never stop in our yoga classes.
Our classes also focus on responsibility and life skills. Children will learn how to prepare themselves for class. Where do I put my shoes? Where is my space? What is the routine? All of these questions and more will be answered by the child with guidance. Children will also learn to do things like, unrolling and rolling their yoga mat. It won’t be perfect, but with practice, they will become responsible, independent little yogis.

All a child needs to bring with them in order to be successful in our yoga class is their wonderful selves and a willingness to have fun. Clean yoga mats will be provided for every class. A water bottle is always recommended, but not required. Clothing that allows children to play and be comfortable is important.
